BEYOND TIME AND WAR: A Love Left Unfinished (Chaper- 8)

                                        " WHERE SILENCE SCREAMS"

As the truck slowed down, the heavy tires crunching over gravel, a cold gust of wind swept inside through the open flap. You pulled your jacket tighter, the sudden chill brushing against your neck like a silent warning.

Soldier 1: "We're here. Welcome to the edge."

The back of the truck opened with a loud creak. One by one, the team jumped down — boots hitting the hard ground, breath forming small clouds in the freezing air.

You stepped down slowly, your eyes scanning the unfamiliar surroundings. Tall fences, searchlights rotating in sync, distant hills half-covered with frost, and silence… unnaturally silent. Not even birds.

You shivered — not just from the cold, but the atmosphere. Something about this place already felt different. Heavier.

Captain Jeon (softly, beside you):

"Stay close. DMZ isn't just cold in weather… it’s cold in intent too."

You glanced at him. The wind played with his hair as he looked ahead — serious, focused. The way he stood, one hand on his gun, the other gently guiding the team forward… made you feel both safe and unnerved.

In that moment, the cold didn’t bother you as much. It was the feeling that something was waiting in this quiet snow-covered border. Something from the past. Something you hadn’t faced yet.

YN (softly to yourself):

"Why does it feel like my past is waiting here?"

Jimin (stretching his back, forcing a laugh):

“New home sweet home, I guess.”

Captain Jeon (sharp): “Don’t get too comfortable. Stay alert.”

You nodded, trying to focus… but your heartbeat had already started speeding up for reasons you couldn’t explain.

And then—you saw them.

A group of soldiers approached. One of them… tall, quiet, face half covered by a mask. Just the eyes showing.

But those eyes—

Your world stopped for a second.

They were the same.

Exactly the same.

The eyes you saw on the night your sister was taken away.

The eyes you could never forget.

Because they were the last thing you saw before everything turned into blood and screams.

Your throat tightened. Breathing suddenly felt like a task. You froze. Memories rushed in like a wave crashing too fast.

You were just a child.

It was raining. You were crying. And those eyes… those masked eyes…

Officer Ema (coming beside you, nudging your arm): “Hey… are you okay?”

You quickly shook your head, blinking the memories away.

YN (fake smile, whispering): “I’m fine. Just… the air here is different.”

But your hands were slightly trembling.

And Captain Jeon noticed.

He kept watching you quietly. Your change in expression, your stiffened shoulders, your eyes that suddenly lost focus.

Captain Jeon (softly, low voice so only you could hear): "What's wrong?"

You looked away quickly.

YN (avoiding his eyes): “Nothing… I just—felt dizzy.”

He didn’t believe you. He could tell something had shifted. But he didn’t see who you were looking at.

Captain’s jaw clenched slightly. Not out of suspicion—but concern.

You had always looked so strong… so calm. But right now… something about you looked small. Fragile.

He wanted to ask more.

But didn’t. Not yet.

Commander Shin (walking forward):

“You’ll be split into teams. Missions will begin tomorrow at dawn. DMZ isn't your normal field—it has rules of its own. Stay sharp.”

The masked soldier passed by again.

Your eyes followed him for a second.

Your fingers unconsciously touched the locket you always wore—your sister’s. The pain in your chest returned… stronger than ever.

Only you knew the truth.

You never saw that man’s face… only those eyes.

And now… they were here.

You silently walked away toward your assigned barracks, your heart thudding louder with every step.

From a distance, Captain Jeon kept watching.

Meanwhile that masked man,

As he walked past you, he didn’t turn his head—

But his lips curled into a slow, knowing smirk under the mask.

Masked Man (in his thoughts):

“Well well… so fate brought us back together.”

“You were so small back then… fragile. Scared. Helpless.”

He kept walking casually, hands behind his back.

“I didn’t think we’d meet again... not like this.”

“But no matter.”

“Now, we’ll meet properly. This time, up close.”

His eyes glinted with twisted pleasure as he passed by the camp walls, imagining the fear in your eyes again.

“You remember me, don’t you? Hmmm??

“Even if it was just my eyes… you saw enough.”

A quiet chuckle escaped his breath.

“This time, I’ll make sure you don’t forget anything.”

Meanwhile you,

You entered your assigned room in silence, heart still unsettled.

The others around you were busy setting things up, arranging kits, or talking. But you—you were stuck in a loop.

Those eyes. That look.

It was him. It had to be him.

How is he here? Why is he here?

You placed your bag down mechanically and sat by the window, your eyes trailing outside...

...And then you saw him again.

The same man. Leaning casually near the training ground wall.

His mask was down now, but from the side—

Those eyes were still visible.

Your breath hitched.

Flashback hits like a storm:

Rain falling.

Your screams.

The blood.

Those eyes turning to look straight at you...

Before darkness took everything.

Your eyes widened in fear. You stood up suddenly, knocking over your water bottle.

Panic. It wrapped around you like a cage.

You rushed to the door, barely realizing what you were doing.

You just needed air. Space. Safety.

You yanked the door open—and ran out.

And right outside—

He stood there.

Captain Jeon.

He Surprised to see you, his brows furrowed instantly as you stumbled toward him.

And without a second thought—

You hugged him.

Tightly. Desperately. Like he was the only thread keeping you from falling apart.

Meanwhile Captain's reaction,

His arms froze mid-air.

His breath caught.

His heart… skipped.

He felt your fingers clutching his uniform tightly, your forehead against his chest, your body trembling.

Your voice came out like a broken whisper.

YN (whispering, trembling):

“Please… don’t leave me, Please…”

Tears quietly rolled down your cheeks, soaking into his shirt.

Your fingers clutched tighter, like letting go would mean shattering into pieces.

Captain Jeon (in his mind):

“What happened to her?”

“What did she see?”

“Who did this to her?”

Slowly, carefully—he wrapped his arms around you.

Secure. Protective. Gentle, yet strong.

Captain Jeon (softly, close to your ear): “I’m right here.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

And for a moment…

Even with the chaos inside you, You could finally breathe.
